Mary's Meal and Back Project
Mr Sean Devlin, past Principal of Ballylifford PS visited the school recently to talk to the pupils about Mary’s Meals & Backpack Project and invited the school community to take part in the project. It is a fantastic learning opportunity for recycling, citizenship, inclusivity, geography, organisational skills, enterprise skills, group work and well-being.
We are aware that the project is similar to the Christmas Shoebox appeal by supporting those underprivileged in the world so we will support each charity alternative years to avoid any demands as all our families always support generously.
Mary’s Meals offers hope to some of the world’s poorest children by providing them with a daily meal in their place of education. These nutritious meals attract children to the classroom, where they can gain the education that could be their route out of poverty. Today, Mary’s Meals provides more than 1.3 million meals daily. Unfortunately, many of the children in the schools do not have books, pens or pencils. This is where the Backpack Project helps.
You can help in one of three ways:
- You can donate your old backpacks. They do not have to be new. Second-hand, in good condition is perfectly fine. The only items that must be new are soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste.
- Get together with your family or with your friends and fill a backpack with the items on your list. Again, good second-hand stuff is fine, or you can find what you need in pound shops. Label your backpack with a suggested age, and whether it is for a boy or girl.
- Choose one or two items from the list to donate. They will be used to fill empty backpacks which are donated by other people. Don’t be tempted to put in treats or extra gifts. It is important to only include items that are on the list. Every backpack is checked to make sure they have the same contents. This is important for customs reasons and to ensure fairness during distribution.
We intend running the campaign until Monday 25th June
Thank you in anticipation of your support.
